Because the USB specification version naming is so confusing, I believe even enthusiasts have a hard time figuring it out. Now, the USB-IF organization has reformulated the specification for USB-C cable naming, and it is quite concise.
According to the new regulation, which took effect on March 15, USB-C data cables will be classified by two dimensions, namely speed and power, and manufacturers will be required to give clear labels so that consumers can distinguish and choose between them.
The main contents of the new rules are as follows:
1, USB-C to USB-C data cable from the current emphasis on standardized version of the practice to rate classification, USB-IF organization will not accept the certification of USB 3.2 Gen2 10Gbps Type-C to USB-C data cable. In the future, there are only four types of USB-C to USB-C data cables, which are 480Mbps, 5Gbps, 20Gbps and 40Gbps. The specification of the USB-C to USB-C data cable is much clearer than the previous verbose naming.
2. In terms of transmission power, after the USB-C to USB-C data line, there are only two versions of transmission power, respectively 60W and 240W. The original 100W power was cancelled and 240W was replaced.
3. Any USB-C to USB-C data cable must be marked with the transmission rate and power specified by USB-IF. The label printed with the specified Logo can be firmly pasted on the data line, or the Logo can be directly printed on the outer mold. The data cable with the speed of 480Mbps is not marked with the speed, only with the power. For the other three types of data, the speed and power must be marked simultaneously.
4. When USB-C data cable is certified, the manufacturer must first apply for a special Logo from USB-IF, and then send samples with Logo to test. The certified laboratory will also first check whether the sample is correctly labeled with the Logo before conducting the test.
